Planning for recovery
Preparation extends beyond the operation
Your individual instructions
Ask for a recovery plan specific to your operation and health. Follow your surgical team’s instructions for activity, wound care, medication and follow-up.
Help at home
Discuss transport, household tasks and who can help during early recovery. Include a family member or support person in the planning when useful.
Communication
Before leaving the hospital, know whom to contact with concerns, including after hours. Ask which symptoms need urgent assessment.
Your next step · About 2 minutes
Identify a planning question
Name a possible helper, a backup and one question about your treating team’s recovery instructions.
Use the free consultation worksheet or write your answer on paper.
