LOWER BACK
Lumbar fusion
Stability at the treated levels
The procedure
Fusion joins vertebrae using bone graft. Screws, rods and spacers may support the treated area while fusion develops. The approach can be from the back, front or side.
The goal in your case
Clarify the structural problem the surgeon intends to address and why fusion adds value for your diagnosis.
Readiness and clinical context
Discuss bone health, nicotine use, diabetes, nutrition and how the extent of surgery may affect recovery.
Alternatives to discuss
Ask whether decompression alone or a nonsurgical approach is reasonable, and why the surgeon recommends one option over another.
A question for your surgeon
What evidence shows fusion adds benefit for my diagnosis?
Ask your surgeon to review important complications, the likelihood of benefit and what recovery may involve for you. This summary is not a complete consent discussion.
